I have seen the question will aeration level my lawn pop up around the internet. I have had my fair share of high spots and low spots in my lawn and have tried a few different methods that worked great and one that did nothing at all. So, let’s see if using aeration level to level your lawn is fact or fiction.
Will Aeration Level My Lawn? (The Short Answer)
Lawn aeration will not level a lawn. The aeration process only removes soil cores from the ground or creates cuts/spike holes. Aerators have no ability to either fill low spots or remove high spots from your lawn. Therefore, even with extensive aeration over several years, aeration will have no effect on the unevenness of a lawn.
Ok…But Will Aerating Help Somewhat with a Bumpy Lawn?
Unfortunately, aeration does nothing to help a bumpy lawn. An aerator, whether it be a spike aerator vs plug aerator, only makes holes in a lawn. We aerate our lawns because it reduces soil compaction and improves issues such as poor drainage, root respiration, and nutrient availability.
So, does aerating a lawn make it level? Unfortunately, no. To level a lawn, you’ll want to fill and roll.
What WILL Level Your Lawn (Steps You Need to Take)
If you’re disappointed by my answer, then don’t worry. There are two ways to level an existing lawn. The first method is to roll out high spots. The second is to fill in low stops. Now depending on how unlevel your lawn is, you may just be able to get away with rolling. But if you have large hollows or particularly large bumps, you’ll need to grab a shovel.
Bringing a lawn up to get rid of hollows is really just a case of adding dirt in small amounts, whereas you might need to cut out big bumps. But in my experience, a roller, rake, and a few bags of dirt are all you need to level out a lawn.
So will aeration level my lawn? No, but a couple of tools and some dirt will.
