The germination process can sometimes seem to take forever or seem to complete almost immediately. When you’re growing a new lawn or even overseeding an established lawn, you want to know how long your grass will take to sprout so you can plan around it.
The last thing you want to do is wait for two months, like I once did, expecting your lawn to sprout any day now. Then I thought to look up the manufacturer’s directions online, just to make sure I hadn’t done anything wrong. It turns out the seeds should have sprouted in a week or less- guaranteed. Lesson learned: know your germination rates and pay attention to guidelines for your specific grass seed.
So … Just How Long Does It Take Grass Seed to Germinate?
Most grass seed varieties will germinate in about a week, give or take a few days. They need enough water and warmth, too. If it’s been more than 2 weeks and you haven’t seen sprouts, something is wrong. If adding more water doesn’t work you should contact the distributor or manufacturer of those seeds to see what, if anything, you or they can do to resolve the problem.
How the Time of Year Affects Grass Seed Germination
The time of year determines the weather and climate. Rainfall, temperature, and amount of sun can drastically alter how long germination takes and how well your grass grows once it has germinated.
How Long Does it Take Grass Seed to Germinate in the Winter?
If you live in a place where temperatures dip below 45F in the winter, your grass seed should not be germinating. If it is, something is very wrong and those sprouts will not survive. If you overseed during a cold winter, those seeds should stay dormant and then germinate in about a week during the following spring.
If you live in a place where the temperature stays above 45F all winter, your germination rates may vary. Temperatures above 45F but below 65F may result in erratic germination or failure to germinate. Temperatures above 65F should lead to successful germination in a week or less for most types of grass seed.
How Long Does it Take Grass Seed to Germinate in the Spring?
As temperatures warm up in the spring, you should see your grass seed begin to germinate within a week of leaf buds showing up on the trees, if your grass seeds were planted in the winter. If you plant your grass seeds in the spring, once all danger of frost has passed, you should see germination in 5 to 14 days.
How Long Does it Take Grass Seed to Germinate in the Summer?
Grass seeds will germinate the fastest in the summer, provided they receive enough moisture. Warmth is one of the key factors a grass seed will take into account when it decides if it’s time to grow or not. If temperatures are above 75F and conditions are at least damp, you should see germination in about 5 to 7 days for most grass seed types.
How Long Does it Take Grass Seed to Germinate in the Fall?
Unless you are overseeding an annual variety of grass over a warm-season lawn for the winter, grass seeds should not be germinated in the fall. If this is the case, you should see similar germination rates as you would in summer with germination taking place in 5 to 10 days.
How to Tell If Grass Seed is Germinating
Germinating is essentially the process of the seed opening up and a sprout forming. The easiest way to see if this is happening is to dig up a grass seed and look at it. If it seems to be growing, that means it has successfully germinated. If the seeds look the same as when you planted them after 2 weeks or they are fuzzy and covered in mold, there is a problem and these seeds may not germinate. Even with Bahia grass, at 2 weeks at least a portion of the seeds should have germinated.
Factors That Affect How Fast Grass Seed Germinates
Grass seeds, though one of the most resilient plant and seed types, still have specific needs that must be met for ideal germination conditions.
Temperature
For most grass seed varieties, including Bermuda and Ryegrass, temperatures should be 70F to 85F for ideal germination. The farther you get outside of this range, the slower germination will be and the more likely seeds will be to fail the germination process.
Light
Seeds need adequate light to grow. A grass seed buried more than 2 inches underground may either fail to germinate or fail to thrive.
Water and Rain
Seeds and new sprouts need water to germinate and thrive in their initial few weeks of life. It’s always recommended that you water your lawn a bit extra when you are trying to germinate grass seeds.
pH
To germinate seeds of any kind, you need a neutral or slightly acidic pH. The higher the pH, the lower and slower your germination rate will be.
Seed Age
Older seeds will take more time to germinate. Over time, as seeds “rest”, their internal resources are expended. It can take several years for grass seed to reach this point, but it is an important thing to keep an eye on.
Seed Coating
Seed coating can help moisture cling to the exterior of a seed, boosting its likelihood to germinate. This is especially true if the seeds are planted in the hottest parts of summer when moisture evaporates the fastest.
Grass Seed Germination Rates for Different Lawn Grass Varieties
Not all lawn grass seeds will germinate at the same rate, though they should all germinate in 2 weeks or less in optimal conditions. That is, unless you’re trying to grow a lawn from seeds that do not germinate well. For example, Zoysia grass seeds can take up to 4 weeks to germinate as well as can be expected.
Let’s take a look at a few common grass varieties below.
How Long Does it Take for Fescue Grass Seed to Germinate?
Fescue grass seed typically takes a week to germinate, though it needs significant moisture to do so. A lack of moisture could mean slower germination, though all seeds that will germinate should do so within 14 days.
How Long Does it Take for Ryegrass Seed to Germinate?
Ryegrass is one of the fastest grasses when it comes to both germination and new growth. You should see ryegrass sprouts in as few as 5 days or a maximum of 10 days.
How Long Does it Take for Bermuda Grass Seed to Germinate?
Bermuda grass isn’t the best grass to grow from seed and can give mixed results in the same lawn. The healthiest seeds could sprout in as little as 2 weeks, though some will continue to open up for up to 4 weeks.
How Long Does it Take for Bahia Grass Seed to Germinate?
Bahiagrass may have the slowest germination rate- one far outside the norm, even for a warm-season grass. Bahia is better grown from cuttings or plugs but can be grown from seed. The average germination rate for Bahia after an entire month is 50%.
