Worx WG775 Lil Mo Review

Worx's mowers always seem to look a little bit different from the rest. Everyone has their own opinion. Some people think they look like toys but I actually think that they look pretty cool. They are new, innovative and just different. The Worx WG775 Lil'Mo is no exception. It's a cordless battery-powered mower and at under $200 its price point is very attractive. I am actually a big fan of battery-powered mowers and the technology used is improving all the time. I had heard pretty good things about this one and wanted to give it a trial run. I tested it out in various conditions and was keen to know what kind of performance it offers and how good its battery is. I've put all of my findings into this review.

Worx WG775 Lil’Mo Review – Key Features

  • Setting It Up – Like the majority of mowers these days this one comes practically assembled. All you need to concern yourself with is the handle and the grass bag. It only took me a few minutes to figure out and I was ready to go.
  • Size and Build – This mower is one of the smallest available on the market. It’s only got a 14 inch cutting width and you need to be aware of that fact prior to purchasing it. What are the ramifications of having such a small cutting deck?Well you cut less grass on each pass, so you’ll have to make more passes to cut your lawn and as a consequence it will take you longer. What you really have to decide is whether that bothers you. I’ve got a medium-size lawn and I found it okay but I do like mowing and I didn’t mind being out in the garden for a bit longer than usual. To keep it light weight (and I guess to keep the cost down too) Worx have used a lot of plastic in the design of this one. This is actually pretty important because the lead acid battery is fairly heavy and you don’t have a self propel system. On the whole I was pretty pleased with the quality of construction of the Worx WG775.
  • 24 Volt battery – The fact that the mower is powered by a battery provides you with a freedom that you just don’t get with corded models. You aren’t restricted by a cable, you don’t have to constantly look over your shoulder and going around things like trees is much, much easier. The battery itself is a lead acid battery, which isn’t the latest battery technology (again I think Worx have used this type of battery to keep the cost down) and is heavier than a lithium ion battery. However I was impressed that you can easily and quickly remove it for charging purposes (it’s got a nice little carry handle) and it’s really simple to reinstall. There is also a battery power level indicator which I found particular useful when I was out and about and it helped me plan ahead.
  • 3-in-1 – I’m a huge fan of mowers that boast three different cutting options as it gives me the freedom to choose the right option for the conditions in my lawn. You can bag the clippings if you want to keep everything as tidy as possible. You can mulch if you want to provide your lawn with some free nutrients and just in case you don’t like either of those options you can side discharge to.
  • Cutting Heights – Okay so the cutting heights you have available aren’t the greatest ever if you want to get a short cut (as it only cost down to 1.8 inches) and I’d really like to see Worx implement a lower cut setting.
  • Handle – The handle is foam padded and I found it really comfortable to use. The handle bar can be collapsed really quickly and easily when it comes to putting it away after you’ve finished.
  • Grass Bag – The bag is a little on the small side if you are doing anything more than trimming. I like the solid feel of the grass bag and also the fact that there is an indicator valve to help you check when it’s getting full. There’s also a carry handle which makes taking it off and putting it back on a breeze.

Worx WG775 Lil’Mo Review – How Did It Perform?

  • Cutting Ability – I found this mower did me proud on both my front and back gardens, which I always keep well maintained. When I tried it out on the grass at the side of my house, which is not as well kept (yeah I’m lazy and I do let it overgrow a bit – probably because I can’t see it out of the window!), it didn’t perform quite so well. It didn’t seem to have enough power to deal with longer grass (although when I say longer it was pretty darn long) and seemed to struggle at times with the thicker variety of grass I have there. I also think (as mentioned above) that the lowest cut height should be a bit lower. Apart from that I really had no complaints – it did well on wet grass and dry grass and the mulching feature works great (although I did only mulch in dry conditions) – I think the special blade really helped with this.
  • Grass Collection – The grass collection feature worked fine. It didn’t drop grass clippings everywhere and deposited them nicely into the bag. My only real comment with regards to this feature is the fact that the bag is pretty small. This does mean that it fills up pretty quick and you end up emptying it fairly often. But then this is a small mower so it makes sense that it has a small bag I suppose.
  • Battery Performance –I was quite pleased with the battery performance. I was getting 45 to 55 minutes of runtime and completed both of my lawns twice on a single charge(backyard is about two tennis courts in size, with the front yard being about half that size). One thing I did notice though is that when the power indicator drops to a single bar, the performance of the mower does dip somewhat. What I mean is you don’t seem to get the same amount of power, which is obviously detrimental if you are in the middle of some thick grass or slightly overgrown grass. When it comes to recharging the battery, it recharges rapidly.
  • Manoeuvrability – First things first. The price of this lawn mower is comparable to that of an electric mower with a cord. Not having to deal with an electric cord makes the mower so much more manoeuvrable. I was going around my flowerbeds without a care in the world. I wasn’t having to constantly look back and make adjustments to the cable position first. It’s also really lightweight. I think it’s only just over 30 lbs – even with the battery on-board! It rolls easily across the lawn and doesn’t put any stresses and strains on your body like a gas powered mower does. One thing to watch out for though – when the grass bag gets full the mower can tend to get a bit back heavy and the front-end lifts up if you’re not careful (not really a big deal though to be honest).
  • Usability –Electric mowers in general are really easy to use and this one is no exception. To get a gas mower that starts as easy as this one does you will have to pay hundreds of dollars. All you have to do is push a button and then squeeze a trigger. There’s no more shoulder ache and it starts at the first attempt – that’s really awesome! It’s also not too loud which is nice. The batteries are easy to recharge and the grass bag is a snap to remove. There’s really nothing to it.

Worx WG775 Lil’Mo Review – Who Should Buy This Mower?

The fact that this mower has such a small cutting width means it’s ideally suited to small gardens. As the runtime of the battery is fairly decent though you could use it on bigger yards, but you would have to accept that you’ll be doing a lot more walking. You could also make use of it to supplement your ride on mower in large gardens as its great for getting into small spaces (such as between bushes or trees) where ride on mowers just can’t go. It’s also a great mower for women and the elderly because it’s so lightweight and easy to push.

Worx WG775 Lil’Mo Review – Who Shouldn’t Buy This Mower?

I wouldn’t recommend using this as your main mower if you have a large garden. At 14 inches you will have to make a lot of passes to get the job done. I also wouldn’t really recommend using it if you need something to power through longer grass regularly. This type of usage will dramatically decrease the runtime of the battery meaning you are always waiting for it to charge up again. Another thing I noticed is that it works much better if the ground is fairly even. The land at the side of my house is a little bit bumpy and in certain areas I had to go over it a few times because the mower was skipping patches. Phew! I think that’s everything. As you can see this mower does have its limitations – but for the money it’s honestly a great purchase if you’ve got a small garden. Gas powered mowers can be a pain in the ass to use in small gardens – as they are generally not as easy to manoeuvre (especially if you are not that physically strong). No cord, no lump of metal and no problem with the Worx WG775 Lil’Mo.

About Tom Greene

I've always had a keen interest in lawn care as long as I can remember. Friends used to call me the "lawn mower guru" (hence the site name), but I'm anything but. I just enjoy cutting my lawn and spending time outdoors. I also love the well-deserved doughnuts and coffee afterward!
