The American Lawn Mower Company can rightfully boast that they were there at the beginning of the lawn mower industry. Their roots go back more than 120 years to a time when horses were the predominant means of transportation and there were no vacuum cleaners, air conditioners or radio stations.
The company pioneered mass production of the reel lawn mower and are still, to this day, America’s largest producers of those human powered, environmentally friendly devices. But American Lawn Mower Co is a company that refuses to sit still and today they offer a variety of battery powered and corded mowers as well, as we will see in the American Lawn Mower Company reviews below.
Our American Lawn Mower Company Reviews
History of American Lawn Mower Company
The American Lawn Mower Company is among the oldest continually operating manufacturing companies in the US, having started in 1895. The company’s first product was the reel-style lawn mower that still forms the basis of their product line to this day.
In 1936 the company purchased Great States Corp, producers of the Shelbyville Reel Lawn Mower. That merger proved fortuitous and is at least partially responsible for allowing American Lawn Mower to survive the dramatic downturn in the reel lawn mower business after World War II.
Another reason American Lawn Mower was able to weather the dip in the reel mower market was because they had prudently invested in an iron foundry. That allowed them to obtain the cast iron mower components they needed at a very reasonable price other reel mower manufacturers could not match.
In the late 80s the market for reel lawn mowers saw a resurgence, due at least in part to a growing awareness of environmental issues. Many were (and are) attracted to the reel mower because it burns no fossil fuels and produces no carbon dioxide emissions.
Today, it’s estimated that some 300,000 reel-style mowers are sold each year in the US with American Lawn Mower accounting for almost all of those sales. As you read our American Lawn Mower Company reviews, you will perhaps gain a greater appreciation of how their dedication to craftsmanship and value has enabled them to flourish.
Where are American Lawn Mower Co Mowers Made?
American Lawn Mower Company lawn mowers are made in the USA at the company’s factory in Shelbyville, Indiana. The Shelbyville factory is one they acquired when they purchased the Great States Corporation back in 1936. It currently employs more than 100 people.
Because American Lawn Mower caters to a global market - including customers in places as far flung as Australia, Latin America, Japan and even Saudi Arabia - the company has the added distinction of being one of an ever shrinking number of American manufacturers that actually export their American made products to overseas markets.
